The short version: Knabberfuchs has no accounts, no analytics, no ads, and no tracking. Everything you log lives in a database on your phone. Nothing is sent to us — we don't run a server and we never see your data. A few optional features talk to outside services only when you use them, and only with the minimum needed to work.

1. Who we are

Knabberfuchs (“the app”) is an offline-first calorie tracker for Android and iOS. This policy explains what the app does and doesn't do with your information. If anything here is unclear, contact us at developer@knabberfuchs.ch.

2. Data stored on your device

Everything you enter — your food diary, recipes, custom foods, daily targets, and settings — is stored only in a local database on your device. It is never uploaded to any server of ours and is not readable by us; it leaves the device only if you export it — or through your device's own backup system (below).

You can export all of your data to a backup file (a ZIP containing JSON and CSV) and restore it later. That file is saved wherever you choose and is never sent to us or anyone else.

Like most apps, the app's local database is included in your device's own backups (Google Drive device backup on Android, iCloud or computer backups on iOS) if you have them enabled. Those backups are created and encrypted by Android or iOS under your platform account — we have no access to them, and you can exclude the app or turn device backups off in your system settings.

3. Information that leaves your device

The app only contacts the internet for the specific features below, and never sends personal identifiers (no name, no email, no account, no device ID, no advertising ID).

FeatureWhat is sentTo whom
Barcode scan & food search The barcode number or the words you typed Open Food Facts (world.openfoodfacts.org)
AI meal estimate (optional) The meal photo you took and/or the meal description you typed — only if you have added your own Google Gemini API key Google (generativelanguage.googleapis.com)
Offline database download A standard file-download request for the country database you chose Hugging Face (huggingface.co)
“Add to Open Food Facts” Opens Open Food Facts' own website in your browser; any product you submit is handled there Open Food Facts

AI meal estimates are off by default

The “scan a meal with AI” and “describe a meal” features only work after you have personally entered a Google Gemini API key in Settings. Without a key, nothing is ever sent to Google — the app simply explains how to activate the feature.

If you use your own Gemini key

When enabled, the meal photo (together with the optional short text hint you can type to describe it, e.g. “homemade calzone”) or the meal description you typed is sent to Google's Gemini API to estimate the dish and its calories. That request is governed by Google's Privacy Policy and the terms of Google AI Studio / the Gemini API. Depending on your Google account and plan, Google may use data sent to the free tier to improve their services. This is your choice; the app works fully without it.

4. Apple Health & Health Connect (optional)

If you turn it on, the app can write your logged calories and macronutrients to your device's health store — Apple Health on iOS, or Health Connect on Android. If you additionally enable the activity budget, the app also reads your active energy (workout burn) from the health store to adjust the day's calorie budget. All of this stays on your device, within Apple Health or Android Health Connect, and is never transmitted to us. You can disable either at any time, and you control the permissions through your device's Health settings.

5. No analytics, ads, or tracking

The app contains no advertising, no analytics or crash-reporting SDKs, no social-media trackers, and no third-party tracking of any kind. We do not build profiles and we do not sell or share data — because we never collect it in the first place.

6. Children's privacy

The app is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, regardless of age.

7. Retention & deletion

Because your data is stored only on your device, you are in full control of it. Deleting entries in the app removes them, and uninstalling the app removes all of its local data. There is nothing stored on our side to request deletion of.

8. Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we will update this page and the “last updated” date above. Material changes will be reflected here before they take effect.
